Cambridge Online, Connecting Cambridgeshire and Cambridge City Council launch new Digital Directory to bridge the digital divide

Cambridge Online, in collaboration with Connecting Cambridgeshire and Cambridge City Council, is delighted to announce the launch of a new Digital Inclusion Directory.

This practical guide has been designed with the aim of reducing digital exclusion by breaking down the barriers to being online. The printed directory will be made available in libraries and organisations in communities across Cambridgeshire.

The directory offers clear, accessible information to help residents find affordable data plans, access necessary digital equipment such as laptops and mobile phones, and lists places to find support and get help to develop the skills needed to navigate the digital world effectively. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to ensure that everyone in Cambridgeshire has the opportunity to benefit from and participate fully in the digital age.

Marcus Whewell, CEO at Cambridge Online, explained: “Cambridge Online is delighted to have helped put together this important booklet. More than 1 in 5 people suffer from some form of digital exclusion, and they often don’t know where to turn for information and assistance. This guide showcases some of the excellent groups across the county that individuals can approach free of charge to seek an answer to their query. This is a wonderful way to communicate the extensive support available, and of course we will always be there to help from our head office in Cambridge.”

Will Plant, Digital Inclusion Lead for Connecting Cambridgeshire said: “The new Digital Inclusion Directory is a fantastic example of what happens when partners come together to provide clear, practical support for residents.

“At Connecting Cambridgeshire, we know that improving digital infrastructure is only part of the picture – people also need access to devices, affordable data, and the right support to build confidence and skills. This directory makes it easier for individuals and organisations alike to find that support close to home. We’re proud to be part of this collaborative effort to close the digital divide and empower more people across our communities.”

A spokesperson from Cambridge City Council, who are supporting the delivery of the Directory, added: “The City Council recognises that people who do not have access to the internet and the skills to use it, face a huge disadvantage in today’s world. The Community Grant scheme was set up to reduce social and/or economic inequality for city residents in greatest need, and so funding the digital directory was one way for us to ensure more individuals can benefit from opportunities and services that the digital world offers, such as education, employment, healthcare and social connections and reduce inequality”

This collaborative effort between Connecting Cambridgeshire, Cambridge Online and Cambridge City Council highlights the importance of digital inclusion and the positive impact it can have on individuals and communities. The new digital directory is a valuable resource for anyone looking to improve their digital skills, access affordable technology, and stay connected in today’s digital world.

The work to pull together the Directory also provides a solid foundation on which Connecting Cambridgeshire will develop and build a more comprehensive and accessible map of all the digital support services available across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. By bringing together local resources, the aim is to make it easier for residents to find the right help and support for them locally when they need it.

Residents can pick up a printed copy of the Cambridgeshire Digital Inclusion Directory at their local Library, or other community spaces such as the CambsACRE community hubs. There’s a online link to the Directory, or look for the posters with a QR code to scan to view the PDF version and access support instantly.
